Remarks
Since the right valve is round and bulbous, a handle is attached to use it as a ladle.
The left valve is flat and resembles a fan. When I traveled through Shikoku in the
1990s, I once saw a ladle made from an Itaya gai in a village near Cape Ashizuri.
Typically, the right valve is white and the left valve is brown. However, there are
also specimens, such as the one figured, in which both valves turn purplish-brown.
