Remarks
"Bun" and "Ka" refer to the patterns on the shell surface. Specimens with an entirely
brown shell are referred to as "Abura gai," while those with a white shell are
referred to as "Mimi shiro gai." At fishmongers and fish markets, both
Meretrix lusoria (Röding, 1798) and Meretrix lamarckii Deshayes, 1853
are referred to as Hamaguri. Among these, Meretrix lusoria (Röding, 1798) was
once commonly harvested throughout the country, but it has now disappeared from most
coastal waters.
